Facebook leads to something great! Jen Gould’s Juno Award nomination
Yeah we knock Facebook a lot. How useful is it really. Right now I think Jen Gould thinks it’s pretty cool because a Facebook group led to not only album sales but a Juno nomination:
The power of social networking was about to kick in. A simple request to join the group went out to Hayes’ social sphere of over 150 people, this combined to create the potential reach of tens of thousands - each quite possibly reading in their Facebook ‘newsfeed’ that a friend had joined a group proclaiming “Kids Love Jen Gould’s Music Soup”. You can’t buy that kind of quality media - awareness and endorsement all wrapped up in a message of support.
Well beyond Hayes’ invite list, deep into the social sphere of his extended network, someone found Jen’s music who may never have done so otherwise. Source: radical trust » Blog Archive » Facebook Group Leads to Juno Nomination
Jen Gould, children’s music rock star
I think children’s music doesn’t get a lot of the respect it deserves. Having listened to a lot of Raffi and Sharon, Lois & Bram over the past 10 years, you know it’s some great stuff. Of course the songs do have a bit of risk of ear worm (how many of you parents can sing Baby Beluga?). Regardless, I love this story about a little Facebook group, started by the artist’s husband that spread. Like wildfire. Like head lice in a kindergarten (if you’re parent you know what I mean by that one).
From this little Facebook group she got a deal with Canadian kids’ clothes make Pleese Mum which distributed over 14,000 copies of her CDs, sold over 6,000 copies of her album, and got a Juno nomination to boot!
That might not sound like a lot of sales compared to the latest pop sensation, but in the kids music world, this woman is now a rock star!
Is it Facebook or the people?
Which, of course, leads to the point here–Facebook can do something good after all. But, is it Facebook, per se or the fact that a lot of people are connected there? That’s the operative question.
As always I come back to the fact that Facebook is a tool, It is the hot site du jour, but in Brazil it would be Orkut. For some music, MySpace. In fact I can’t even say it’s social media that is responsible for this. I’d say it’s the fact that we’re so closely connected to each other that the speed of information flow is something just astounding. It’s people being able to share something great at, nearly, the speed of light.
And that’s something pretty amazing, isn’t it?

I would go as far as to say that IS social media. As you mention, all of the platforms our there are simply tools that enable it. Perhaps most importantly… this is a cultural revolution, marketing and communications companies are the echo to this boom. The boom comes from the inherent need for people to communicate, thereby create community via common interest, task and vocation. That is the boom.
The internet is the ultimate enabler of this behavior. Makes for a very exciting time in sociology :-)
