It’s how you handle the down turns-startups only work with great people

by Tris Hussey on February 7th, 2008

So yesterday we had a wee problem with the servers.  Okay wee is an understatement.  The tech team here (virtually of course), has been working almost non-stop since problems cropped up.  The cause?  Doesn’t matter.  Never does really.  It’s how you handle the crisis that matters.  You could scream and yell or you can buckle down and “get’er done”.  Here’s a bit from Aaron’s post this morning:

Encouraging for us is the fact that we are not alone in having these kinds of issues. Growing companies will inevitably hit walls where emergency action has to be taken. It’s wonderful that we have a great team behind the scenes who have worked the better part of 36 hours straight to restore the cluster to its currently functioning state.

We also recognize areas where we could do better in terms of scaling and we will be taking action in the future to help us continue to grow in leaps and bounds. Source: b5media - b5media Outages

This just dovetails so nicely with what I wrote yesterday about sports and startups.  It’s the team.  It’s the drive and spirit of the team that makes a company great.  Here at b5 we have that in spades.  From the top, to managers, to CEs, to bloggers … we’re a team.  We work hard.  I’m glad, of course, that the servers are behaving today, but I’m even happier to have the top notch people keeping the lights on.
