Parking Meters 2.0

by Mark Evans on May 5th, 2007

The parking meter has come a long way since its introduction in 1935 in Oklahoma City. From meters that accepted coins to the latest solar-powered models that accept credit and smart cards, the parking meter has gone high-tech. If Bern Grush has his way, the parking meter will become even more advanced by using global positioning system technology and a “vehicle location billing” system that prices parking based on where you park and the time of day.

Grush’s Toronto-based start-up Skymeter Corp. uses a meter that is placed in each car to provide data to the parking system. So, rather than buying a ticket, the meter kicks in whenever someone’s car stops for a period of time. If the system determines you’re in a parking zone, the meter starts running on a per-minute basis. While it seems like a big step forward, Skymeter’s technology will be tested in San Francisco, Seattle and Miami. For more about vehicle location billing, you can check out Grush’s blog.
