Personal Recommendation Engine On the Way

by Mark Evans on March 16th, 2007

So how do you find a good plumber or a great restauarant or an honest mechanic? For most people, you ask your friends and family for recommendations because you trust their opinions. But asking your friends and family can take a long time given you’ve got to call a bunch of people before finding someone who, for example, has a great plumber. So, wouldn’t it be great if there was a place on the Web where all this “personal recommendation database” was easily accessible? Well, Toronto-based GigPark is hoping to develop it.
The service is still very much work in progress but Noah Godfrey and Pema Hegan, GigPark’s founders, are definitely on to something. I spent an hour talking with Noah and Pema yesterday, and it was refreshing to see that they’re willing to patient about nurturing the idea into a business rather than rush out the door with an alpha or beta.I’ll let GigPark reveal its story and plans but my initial take is the service hinges on getting a critical mass of people and a critical mass of groups. But if they can nail down a few key challenges (attracting users anda solid business plan),GigPark has a shot atsuccess. At the very, it’s encouraging to see young entreprenuers take a crack at a doing a start-up.For more on GigPark, you can check out their blog.
