Rogers Denies It’s Throttling Traffic
If you were worried about the lack of competition within Canada’s high-speed Internet business, this post from CrunchGear could be cause for alarm:
Since I’m not Canadian, I’m a little out of the loop on what Rogers has been up to. According to TorrentFreak, the ISP banned BitTorrent traffic due to excessive bandwidth consumption. Enter encryption and for the next year, everyone is safe. Now in an effort to curb encrypted Bit Torrent traffic, Rogers has started to throttle all encrypted transfers. That means your secure e-mail, login, and everything in between are all screwed and there’s nothing you can do about it except complaining directly to Rogers.
TorrentFreak also points out that Rogers’ slogan is still “for sharing large files and much more.” Now I’m chuckling heartedly on the inside right now and really hope you are as well. Call Rogers today and tell them you don’t want your encrypted traffic being shifted around and blocked!
Update: Rogers spokeswoman Taanta Gupta said the company is not blocking encrypted traffic. “We do traffic shape to ensure that time sensitive traffic - voice, e-mail, Web browsing - gets precedence. Been doing that for a couple of years.”

What a shame that Taanta Gupta gets to by the liar on behalf of her employer.
Michael Geist is refered to in the TorrentFreak post to his article here: http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/1859/125/ talking about how University of Ottawa students are even having their email throttled!
Rogers IS throttling, and ALL of their customers are proof of it, myself included. Just try using BitTorrent at home and watch the speeds dwindle. And forget your upload speeds. They just won’t budge.
Unfortunately we are a passive nation so I’m sure little will be done about this.

They are throttling or traffic shaping or whatever you want to call it. Anyone who’s planning on canceling should pledge to do it at our site. The more people we can demonstrate to Rogers that won’t take this nonsense, the more likely they are to change their business strategy.

They are not blocking it, so she’s technically not lying, but it is now useless. Even if they do not have other traffic to prioritize and bittorrent would be using idle wire space, they still prevent the protocol from going at more than a hundredth of the unthrottled speed.

I was on Rogers in Guelph, ON and they began to throttle uploads down to zero, tho downloads seemed untouched. For a while I was able to bypass with the encryption in uTorrent. When that stopped working I called and canceled my service, stating traffic shaping and torrent throttling as the reason. During the same call I canceled my home phone as well, out of spite, so that I had no remaining services with Rogers. I’m on Bell now and tho the connection isnt quite as fast, torrent traffic is NOT shaped and I am happy.
