That tasty RSS snack you crave with Adobe AIR-based Snackr

by Tris Hussey on May 18th, 2008

As a professional-blogger, I need a steady stream of information to do my job.  Of course that stream comes in via RSS.  Day to day my RSS reader is FeedDemon, but I need a more constant flow of information.

Not long ago RWW had a post with some rockin’ Adobe AIR apps—FreshAIRApps: A Premier Adobe AIR App Directory - ReadWriteWeb—one of the apps I found was Snackr.

Marshall beat me to the punch writing a review of it … which is cool.  I was too busy enjoying it to write about it!

If you’ve ever fantasized about having the river of news flow straight into your brain, this is the closest I’ve seen yet. I’ve uploaded a small OPML file of my top priority feeds, limited Snackr to displaying items from within the last 5 days and am in heaven. Read on for screenshots and some critique.—Snackr is an RSS Addict’s Dream Come True - ReadWriteWeb

Webware concurs with their review …

Snackr may be a distraction for some and overwhelming for others, but I really like having this extremely relevant river of news glide by on my screen. As Marshall mentioned, it’s a pain to remove feeds if you have a lot of them that you need to unsubscribe from after importing an OPML file, so a batch remove feature would be a great addition in the future. Additional features, such as indicating new items in the river and the ability to change themes, are things that would make sense for future releases, but Snackr runs really well and is very functional, especially for a first release.—Snackr drenches your computer in a river of news | Webware : Cool Web apps for everyone

Why is it awesome?

For one thing the first feeds I pushed to it weren’t news, per se, but topic searches for my men’s grooming blog, Manscaping 101.  I wanted a better handle on posts and information as it came up.  I also added searches for beta apps and a few other web 2.0 ish things.

In the first few days, I found several interesting articles about skin care and shaving, etc.

Sure, might not be your cup of tea, but I’m still learning this niche.

Regardless, the point here is that with a ticker of RSS running at the bottom of my screen I could just catch news as it appears (I set it to only show items less than a day old).

As a superb follow up to their Snackr post, RRW has a post with so much OPML goodness, that RSS junkies like me just twitch with glee—OPML Resources for ReadWriteWeb Readers - ReadWriteWeb.

I added a bunch of those feeds to Snackr (I am already subbed to many anyway) and here is my OPML file of feeds (without the Google searches for “mens grooming”): snackr.opml

Snackr is a must download, IMHO. And might be a great way for people new to RSS to see the benefit of it.
