Toronto: Web 2.0 Capital of the North?

by Mark Evans on July 6th, 2006

I suspect some folks in Vancouver - home of Dabble DB, Qumana, Pixpo, Bryght, etc. - will disagree but at least one person, Kiwibloke, thinks Toronto is becoming the “Web 2.0 capital of the north”.

“San Francisco may have the most engineering talent per square mile, but they lack the creative pool that cities like Toronto and New York have. Where Toronto has the edge is in the creative and engineering talent pooling together. It is this confluence of talent that produces one of the most prolific Web 2.0 community on the planet.”

It’s a nice compliment but maybe the post is just an excuse to put a photo of Amber MacArthur..:)

    Mark, great article :)

FYI, the link to the photo of Amber has http://mapleleaftwo.com/ in it. But even without it, I couldn’t find the picture you were referencing…

    Mark,

I would have to agree. This week I had the pleasure of presenting our product at DemoCamp in Toronto. It was my first exposure to the 2.0 scene, aside from Mesh and I was really impressed with the level of activity, as well as the quality of ideas and talent.

Toronto has an advantage of being the financial and cultural capital of Canada.

Having been around a bit, its nice to see the angel/seed financing in the city really mature as well.

Programs like U of T and Waterloo provide tonnes of talent, and Ryerson is producing some impressively creative people.

That said, the more Canucks succeeding the better!

I really don’t need a reason, any reason at all to put Amber on the front page (and I did it again today). The point of the post was the combination of creative talent AND programming talent can make the difference. That is not to say that BC doesn’t have tons of this too, but in terms of creative output Toronto is number one in the Vlogosphere.

    Cheers and Kiaora

Small correction - PiXPO is out of Victoria, not Vancouver. No big deal. Hail to the West ;)

Hey, don’t underestimate Montreal, the level of activity here is steadilty rising, but much more on the individual level than on the VC front… yet. Garage Venture did open it’s local office recently.

Vancouver is also the home of verbdate.com. Dating 2.0 with tags, voip, presence, location, a little AJAX sprinkled on and RSS feeds. Its 100% free and Om calls it, “fabulous” and Weinberger says, “if it were anymore web 2.0ish you could only date Tim O’reilly. Peace and spread the love!
