Twitter from the Canadian Perspective

by Tris Hussey on December 31st, 2007

Earlier this month I caught this post in my ego feeds, looking through I found out why:

Top 5
http://twitter.com/Tolchock - Maki - 2.473 following
http://twitter.com/ambermacarthur - amber mac - 1.560 following
http://twitter.com/lisamac - Lisa McMillan - 937 following

Just to update I follow 1,015 people now.  Why do I follow so many people? Lots of it is following people I know, and those who they follow.  The rest is the whole meme that Marshall Kirkpatrick started that "Twitter pays my rent." yep, sure does.  Like many technology bits Canadians are right up there (or out there) on the adoption curve:

Conclusion
This state of the Canadian Twitosphere is only a snapshot, meaning that the figures mentioned in this post have already changed because the Twitosphere is a very dynamic environment with several new accounts being created every day, new connections being made between accounts (following/followers) and of course new messages being written every hour of the day.
Users from Canada were among the first to start using Twitter (from July 2006). From November 2006 the number of users increased at an higher rate. From April 2007 the growth in the Canadian twitosphere accelerated further. The growth of new Twitter user accounts in Canada slowed a little bit down afterwards. Surprisingly the growth remained at the same speed from June 2007 until now.

Like Facebook, Canadians are on Twitter in droves. In the new year I hope to set up a TwitterPoster Group for Canadians-I think they have to follow me for the DM to go through.  Might have to ping them directly to get it together.  Regardless the use of technologies like Twitter and Facebook have huge adoption curves in Canada.  The question might be why-but for me it’s obvious, Canadians are tech savvy and like to connect with other Canadians and the rest of the world.

Seems simple to me.

BTW if you haven’t read Dan York’s piece on how he uses Twitter-you should.  Like right now.

2 opinions for Twitter from the Canadian Perspective

I think being able to have expanded twitter groups functionality is a great idea. I started an Atlantic Canada twitter list on my blog (right sidebar). However, you like also said, it’s fluid with new accounts being created regularly. We’ve found it has created a localized twitter group for us that we can send relevant messages to each other about local tweet ups, etc.

Hi Lisa, Good idea. I added your blog to my subbed feeds. This is the one great thing about Jaiku and Pownce is the ability to form affinity groups.

Twitter is great, however it can be hard to pull a conversation out of the stream.
