What’s Up With dabble db?
The world is abuzz with the release of Google Spreadsheets, which was released early this morning after the New York Times broke the story yesterday. From early accounts, Google Spreadsheets is to Excel what Writely is to Word - and it comes three months after Google acquired a company called Upstart. Not surprisingly, there is renewed speculation Google is going after Microsoft’s dominance of the office suite market. Google’s Web-based portfolio includes Google Spreadsheets (Excel), Writely (Word), and Google Calendar/GMail (Outlook). All Google needs now is a PowerPoint-like service. From a Canadian perspective, the launch of Google Spreadsheets now thrusts dabble db into the spotlight. The Vancouver-based company launched a spreadsheet and custom database service to much acclaim. Is dabble db behind Google Spreadsheets and, if not, how will it be before dabble db is snapped up now that Google and validated the Web-based spreadsheet market? Update: Here’s a blog post from SmallThought, which develops dabble about the difference between what it’s doing and Google Spreadsheets.

Given that we’ve been saying from day one that we’re trying to help users move beyond spreadsheets for the (many) tasks where they’re inappropriate, this is a little bit amusing - but it’s also a good opportunity to spell out some differences. I’m not totally sold on the fact that google entering enters the space. Spreadsheets are valid. That is old news. Dabble is adding value as their follow up post clearlyb lays out…enough that they are likely to be acquired just for their brain trust I’d say. In fact, I’d put them at the top of the “most likely to be acquired” list….we’ll see.
